In 2021, our family began building a new home (just across the street from our previous home) in the Five Points neighborhood which meant that my in-home Raleigh, NC photography studio would be moving as well. This was such an exciting time for us and for Worth Capturing! We had done home renovations before, but never built a home from scratch so I was nervous but in the best way. Here’s the final result, we are so happy with how everything turned out.
So, let’s head into the studio! Upon entering the front of my home, you’ll see the studio door just to the right from the foyer. I ordered this custom sign (which I really love) from a vendor on Etsy.
The space is not very large, but since I’m mainly photographing babies and children, I don’t really need anything more! I also use very minimal props and having this lovely blank canvas means that all of the emphasis is on the subject and bringing out their personality.
A very important factor in creating a photography studio is light control. My large main window faces west, so it gets direct light in the afternoon. At this time, I only shoot sessions in the mornings, so I don’t have to worry about filtering that light. These simple airy sheer curtains do just the trick. I do have one smaller window next to the bathroom that faces east, so I have a few more layers on that to keep out any light that is too harsh.
As you can see, the colors are totally neutral. I chose a very light colored flooring that looks quite gray in person, and have a very light neutral color on the walls. Choosing the wall color was a daunting task, but this is the main color that we selected for most of our home and I love how it looks here (it’s called pearly white). It is much softer than my previous stark-white studio, and I think it gives a more classic and timeless look. I think it looks beautiful and soft in photos.
With this new build I was able to take the things that I loved about my previous studio space and change/update some things that didn’t work as well. One of the biggest changes that benefits clients is that I now have a bathroom directly off of the studio which is much more convenient than my previous setup. This provides a much needed changing space as well.
Although I’ve only been photographing in this space for a little over a month, it is already winning me over. I am so happy with the selections that I made and the way that it looks in photos. I guess the only thing to do now is to share some of those images with you!
Please reach out on my contact page if you’d be interested in having me photograph your baby, children, or family in my beautiful new space.
