Can you believe your little baby is about to turn one? It feels like just yesterday they were a tiny bundle in your arms, and now they are pulling up, babbling, and full of personality. As a Raleigh cake smash photographer, a first birthday cake smash session is one of my favorite things to document. I love watching their eyes go wide at a whole cake made just for them, those hesitant first touches, and finally the glorious dive into the frosting. Messy? Absolutely. Fun? One hundred percent. Memories you will treasure forever? You bet.

Why This Raleigh Cake Smash Photographer Works in the Studio

I keep cake smash sessions in my Raleigh studio, and there is a reason for that. A studio smash is simple, predictable, and built entirely around your baby, which is exactly what you want on a day that is already a little chaotic.

Weather is never a factor. The studio is comfortable and climate-controlled year round, so there is no rescheduling around rain, cold snaps, or a heat wave. The light is consistent every single time, which means we are not racing a sunset or fighting an early bedtime. And the clean, neutral space keeps your baby as the star of the show, with nothing busy in the frame to date the photos in a few years.

The result is a calm, unhurried session where your little one can just be themselves, and images that will still feel timeless when they are old enough to laugh at them.

What to Expect on Cake Smash Day

Cake smash sessions run about 30 minutes, the same as any studio milestone session. We usually start with a few sweet portraits before the cake comes out, so you have clean images alongside the messy ones. Then we bring in the cake and let your baby lead. Some dive right in, some study it suspiciously for a while, and some need a little encouragement. Every reaction is perfect, and I know how to work with whatever mood your little one is in.

Choosing Your Cake

I do not provide cakes myself, for liability reasons, but the good news is you do not need anything fancy. A small cake or even a large cupcake is all it takes. I generally recommend all white, since it photographs beautifully against the studio and keeps the focus on your baby, but if you have something else in mind, go for it. These photos are for you.

If you need a bakery recommendation I’d check out The Cupcake Shoppe, Edible Art, or Whole Foods.

What to Wear

For baby’s outfit, think cute and comfy. Many parents choose a romper or bubble for the first few portraits, then swap to just a diaper cover for the actual smash so nothing gets in the way of the fun. If you would rather not buy something new, I keep a selection of baby outfits available for client use.

A quick tip: simple and neutral wins. Soft tones and gentle textures keep the attention on your baby’s expressions rather than a busy pattern.

Bring Their Favorite Things

I have plenty of photo-ready toys on hand, but if there is a special toy or keepsake you would love in the photos, bring it along. A familiar object can help a hesitant baby settle in and feel at ease, and it makes the images that much more personal.

How to Book Your Cake Smash

Most families add a cake smash as part of a Baby’s First Year Package, which follows your little one through their whole first year. It can also be booked on its own as a studio milestone session, starting at $600 (a $250 session fee plus your image collection, which starts at $350).

One thing to know: a standalone studio milestone cake smash is just your baby and the cake in that 30-minute window. If you would like family photos too, we would plan a longer session. Family time is already built into the Baby’s First Year Package, so that is the easiest way to get both.

Cake Smash FAQ

How much is a cake smash session in Raleigh?

A standalone cake smash is booked as a studio milestone session, starting at $600. That includes a $250 session fee to reserve your date and your image collection, which starts at $350. You can see full pricing and collections on the studio milestone sessions page. Cake smashes are also included as an option in the Baby’s First Year Package.

What age is best for a cake smash?

Right around the first birthday, usually 11 to 13 months, is the sweet spot. Babies are old enough to engage with the cake and young enough for that classic first-birthday magic.

Do I need to bring my own cake?

Yes. I do not provide cakes, but you do not need anything fancy. A small white cake or a large cupcake is perfect.

Can we include family photos in the cake smash?

A standalone studio milestone cake smash is just your baby in the 30-minute session. If you would like family photos too, we would plan a longer session. Family time is built into the Baby’s First Year Package, or you can schedule a standalone full studio session by contacting Valerie.

Let’s Create Some Memories

A cake smash session is all about celebrating the sweet, silly chaos of turning one. If you are ready for toothy grins, frosting-covered fingers, and images you will cherish long after the crumbs are cleaned up, I would love to photograph it.
