When you are expecting a new baby there are many decisions to make as you excitedly await your little one’s arrival. You know you want newborn photos (yes!) to document this important milestone, but choosing where to have your newborn photos taken can be a tough call for some parents in Raleigh. It’s totally normal to feel a bit unsure as both in-home and studio sessions can create beautiful images. The best fit really comes down to what feels most comfortable for you, the look you’re hoping for, and what will be easiest for your family and your new tiny human. In this post I’ll walk you through the differences, share simple prep tips for each option, and show examples so you can picture how your session might feel.
Prefer the comfort of home and everyday moments? Choose an in-home newborn session. Want clean, timeless portraits with full control over light and background? The studio is your best bet.
Keep reading for the when, why, and how of each option — and if you’d like help deciding between a studio or in-home newborn session, I’m happy to chat as a Raleigh newborn photographer who’s seen both work beautifully.

In-home newborn sessions are absolutely lovely and many families really enjoy having me come to them. No need to load everyone in the car or worry about forgetting an important item at home! I can capture memories in the place that is already so comfortable and special to your family. Do you have to have a magazine worthy space with perfect natural light? Not at all! With over 8 years of experience in the Raleigh area I know exactly how to find the right spaces and add supplemental lighting to make your home shine.
If you, like many parents, have put a lot of time and love into creating a beautiful nursery for your baby then we should show it off! Even if your baby doesn’t sleep in their own room yet, they will be spending a lot of time in there and it will be a special place for them and for you.

Another reason for choosing an at-home newborn session is that it can often be easier for young siblings. Having someone come into their own safe space is sometimes less stressful than having to take them into a completely new environment like the studio. Some families will have an extra set of hands (grandparent, babysitter, etc.) at home to help watch over the sibling(s) while photos are being taken which can be really helpful if they need a break for play, snacks, etc.

Another *big* pro for in-home sessions is being able to include your family’s pets. Many people (including myself) consider their furry friends a member of their family and love the idea of having photos with them included. I am comfortable working with all types of pets and love having them join in the fun.

I like to think of myself as a “babies + dogs” specialist, you can probably see why!

With in-home sessions, your home’s decor becomes part of the story. The final gallery will feel more personal, cozy, and more uniquely yours. Sessions at home also tend to have more of a documentary quality and could even look more like a “day in the life” if you’d like!

Studio newborn sessions are also really classic and beautiful. If you like a clean, neutral palette with that bright and airy look, then this might be the choice for you! The Worth Capturing in Raleigh’s Five Points Neighborhood is a perfect location for those who love a minimalist aesthetic. Without any distractions, all of the focus is on you and your loved ones.

Some families also really appreciate not having to clean their home or have someone come there and I totally get it. I’m happy to provide a clean space for you! The studio is a great choice for families who aren’t crazy about their home’s interior, or don’t have a lot of natural light. Have I created beautiful images from small, dark apartments? Absolutely! But if you really prefer the brighter, airy look then the studio is perfect.

For siblings, since I do not have a separate waiting area I often will photograph the whole family first, and then have one parent take older siblings home while I finish up with the baby & other parent. This generally works out great but is definitely something to consider if you have a larger family.
I absolutely love doing sibling photos whether in-home or studio! As a mom, I know just how precious those photos are of a newly promoted big sister or big brother with the new little one and I do everything I can to create a treasured image (or many!) for you to cherish.

So, what do you think? Are you team studio or in-home newborn session? If you can’t choose – consider doing one for a newborn session and the other for a future milestone session like 6 months or 1 year! Many clients will choose to book a Baby’s First Year package which can include sessions in your home, the studio, or outdoors.
