A warm and welcoming family, a beautiful brand new baby girl, a gorgeous nautical nursery, and an adorable pup. What more could I ask for? As an artist focusing on newborn photography in Raleigh, NC – this session was a dream.
As I describe this beautiful session & share lots of images, I think it’s helpful to talk about the different styles of newborn photography and what I feel is the Worth Capturing “style”. I have always focused on making my newborn sessions relaxed, cozy, and joyful. This means that I don’t do a ton of specific posing, – I just like to tell clients to “get close and cozy” in areas with nice light. My favorite images are those when clients and babies do what feels comfortable to them.
With more relaxed posing and with most of my sessions being in clients’ homes, I’d say I mostly fall into the category of “Lifestyle” photography. This involves focusing on letting clients do what comes naturally to them. For newborn sessions, this means they will probably be mostly looking at their baby/family, not the camera.
As a lifestyle newborn photographer, this means that my sessions will never involve a large number of props or super involved poses. I ask parents what they’d prefer for photos of their baby, and when requested I will bring a few simple items (like a moses basket or bean bag) to help with that. With Elliot’s session, I arrived when she was sleeping so we decided to go ahead and start with photos of just her. I brought my beanbag for this session and she absolutely stole my heart by smiling right at the start!
I loved the sleepy photos I captured of this gorgeous girl. With solo baby shots, I always try to include some lovely detail images as well – tiny toes, fluffy hair, and adorable little fingers.
Once it was time to bring in the parents, things sailed along smoothly. The biggest challenge I had was the clouds that kept rolling through and changing the room from light to dark. I felt like I was constantly adjusting my camera settings all over the place but it’s all good because they turned out beautifully!
I started with Dad while Mom finished getting ready. It was so sweet to see the pure joy in his eyes as he stared at his baby daughter. We then grabbed a shot of her holding onto his pocket with I thought was just adorable.
Mom looked absolutely gorgeous in her blue dress (which coordinated so well with the nursery!).
Of course we can’t leave out their adorable French Bulldog, Oliver!
Another favorite way to photograph baby is in their crib. Little Elliot looked so tiny and sweet here!
I was so honored to help this beautiful family document such an incredibly important time in their lives.
