So, you’ve scheduled a photography session for your baby – that’s great! Now, comes the important task of choosing outfits for your baby’s photo session.
I’m going to walk you through what I recommend for dressing your baby at different ages and locations to hopefully give you plenty of inspiration and clarity.
Newborn babies are so tiny, sweet, and snuggly. Their bodies love to curl up and then stretch out, and keeping them comfortable can be a big part of making sure they’re happy during a photo session. It’s also important to remember that they generally do not like being disturbed for outfit changes, so 1-2 outfits is generally all I’d recommend.
Many families will choose one outfit for baby to wear, and then we will also do photos of baby swaddled/wrapped to keep them happy and snug. My favorite baby outfits are usually rompers or matching sets like the ones pictured here. I also love keeping the hands and feet exposed so I can get sweet detail shots of their tiny fingers and toes.
Another very popular age to schedule baby photos is around 6 to 9 months old when they generally will be able to sit up on their own. Sometimes these are referred to as “sitter sessions” and they are absolutely precious! When babies reach this age they are more interactive, smiling, and so sweet. They often will have chubby arms and legs, so I recommend leaving either arms, legs, or both exposed to show off those rolls. I often photograph this age in my studio, where lighter, softer colors look just stunning. If you prefer pattern, a soft floral or stripe is perfect.
I love to also photograph sitters in just a diaper cover to really capture that precious chunk. I have a few diaper covers in the studio or any bloomers/short shorts will work! Any of these outfits would also work for one year old studio sessions which is another popular time for photographing babies.
I also love photographing babies outdoors, and these outfit choices usually focus on coordinating the family together. I find that for outdoor sessions it’s critically important that babies are dressed appropriately for the weather. So, since weather in our area can vary quite a bit I think it helps to have some options for them depending on what the temperature will be outside. I’ve included a variety of inspiration for you below, from cool summer sets to warmer, knit pieces.
When planning family outfits I generally recommend starting with Mom or even choosing a color palette to work with. I have lots of family outfit ideas over on my Pinterest page so definitely check that out!
I hope that these examples have given you some helpful guidance for choosing outfits for your baby’s next photo session. If you are a Worth Capturing client, you will also have access to my baby wardrobe if you’d prefer to borrow an outfit! You can see all of the items available in the link here.
