Maternity sessions are a wonderful opportunity to take a moment and celebrate you as a couple or as a family before your new family member arrives. Especially for mamas, this is a time to pamper yourself – you can buy or rent a gorgeous dress, get your hair and makeup done, and make sure that you feel special. Your body is doing amazing things and you deserve to be celebrated!
Although we don’t get a lot of snow (which makes me a little sad) one great thing about North Carolina is that we can have outdoor photography sessions pretty much year-round. So, as long as your photographer is flexible with rescheduling when weather isn’t ideal then there’s no reason you can’t plan a session outdoors around Raleigh this time of year. For Brooke & Eric’s January outdoor maternity session things started out a little dreary but by the end we had a gorgeous sunset.
If you’re in an area that gets a lot of snow, a snowy maternity session could be absolutely stunning. I’d recommend sticking with a location with a heated building close by so you can get warm quickly when needed. Boots and wool socks would have totally worked with Brooke’s gorgeous dress pictured here since it completely covered her feet!
If you’re due to have a baby in the winter but still want to be able to have an outdoor session, plan to be flexible. I recommend long dresses year round for mamas, but especially in the winter make sure that you have a long dress with sleeves. There are a lot of adorable maternity coats you could incorporate into an outfit as well!
Another good idea is to have a backup location in mind in case there is bad weather and your due date is very soon. I generally recommend scheduling maternity sessions around 32-36 weeks, which should leave plenty of time for rescheduling if necessary, but babies come when they’re ready so definitely don’t wait until the last minute. Luckily, I have a studio in my home so we certainly could have used that as a backup location if there had been bad weather and her due date was soon.
If your photographer doesn’t own studio space, you can get creative and think of other indoor locations that may work. Having a maternity session in your home can be a really cozy and beautiful option.
These two wanted a more romantic, natural session and I think we achieved that beautifully – I loved how we got just enough sunshine for some lovely glow in some of their images. We got to explore the park a bit and get to know each other which is always my goal when working with a new family. I might as well start off sessions with new clients with “so, tell me your life story” since that’s basically what I end up doing anyway.
I hope to have some precious newborn photos with them to share soon! Eric shared some pretty epic ideas for their baby girl’s session so I have a feeling we’re going to have a blast taking them.
